Alien-Human Flatshare in 2226(2026)

The challenge

As part of a knowledge exchange collaboration between Central Saint Martins and the Museum of the Home, my group was briefed to create a future scenario and a multisensory room-set for it. But how do you imagine the future positively without falling into the dystopian trap that speculative design so often reaches for?

The solution

We imagined a domestic future where humans and aliens live side-by-side, and built a room-set around it: a flatshare in the year 2226, grounded in the daily life of the characters who live there. I designed bilingual IDs for the residents built around a five-flower motif, each flower representing a country that’s part of the UK. I then extended that world into an activity book for the household's youngest resident: an activity book for 5-6 year olds that teaches human and alien kids side-by-side, so a child growing up in this future would recognize integration as simply part of daily life. Together, the IDs and the activity book show integration operating at two levels of a single world: identity and belonging for the adults, and cultural fluency built in from childhood.
